On Monday, April 26, Zakiya Ayers, a 5th grader at PPA, was named a 2021 Ohio History Day Youth Division Medalist for her project, "The Process of Becoming a Nurse." Over 400 students from 50 schools took part in this year's Ohio History Day competition across the Youth, Junior, and Senior divisions.
Zakiya identified a research topic, read numerous secondary sources, explored primary sources from the Library of Congress online archives, wrote an annotated bibliography, authored a process paper, and created a performance that told the story of a fictional character named Eliza who was determined to become a nurse during WWI.
